Last week Dr
Alexander attended the SADC Ministerial Workshop on Illegal Trade in
Wildlife, a high-level discussion around the issue of illegal
poaching and related trades in illegal wildlife products.
The objective of
this workshop was to encourage and facilitate cooperation on these
complex interrelated issues – a call for grater collaboration was
one of the workshop's key outcomes in fact.
These are issues
that affect the entire Southern African region, and therefore can not
be address in isolation.
The workshop,
attended by senior government officials as well as representatives
from the private sector including research and conservation
organisations and community groups was roundly hailed as a success,
and Dr Alexander reports that the conversations and panels she
participated in were worthwhile, productive and offered up some great
new ideas and approaches.
